Google reportedly agrees AI content and tech deal with News Corp

Google has reportedly agreed a deal with News Corp to fund the Times and TalkSport-owner’s new artificial intelligence development.

According to The Information, Google will pay News Corp between $5 million and $6 million to fund its development of new AI-related content and products.

Google previously had a content partnership with News Corp, though this was recently terminated and led to layoffs at the publisher.

In a statement distributed to a range of outlets, a spokesperson for News Corp refuted that a new content-related deal had been reached, saying: "We absolutely do not have an AI content licensing deal with Google, though we do have a number of partnerships with Google across our businesses.”

AI companies are increasingly looking to news outlets as means of training chatbots on archived content. OpenAI has a deal in place with the Associated Press which sees the tech company licence part of the newswire’s archive and the AP leverage the ChatGPT maker’s tech.
