Energy prices could stop people switching to electric cars, warns Which?

Consumer organisation Which? has warned that energy price hikes could stop consumers from switching to electric vehicles (EVs).

Last week media reports claimed that public charging could become even more expensive than petrol as energy prices are set to skyrocket later this year.

According to a report by newspaper i, nearly every public charging point provider has already hiked prices at least once in 2022.

Emily Seymour, Which? energy and sustainability editor, said that a big part of the electric vehicle appeal has been lower running costs and that price increases could “jeopardise more people making the switch to electric cars”.

“Many non-hybrid petrol drivers will still save money by switching to electric, but for many diesel drivers that now won’t be the case,” warned Seymouy. “In a recent survey, we found that the upfront cost of buying an EV is the biggest barrier preventing drivers from considering an electric vehicle – and this latest energy price rise could further prevent people from making the switch.”
