Consumers spend $143 billion on apps in 2020

Worldwide spend on mobile apps jumped by 20 per cent to $143 billion last year.

Top markets driving the increase include China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, according to App Annie’s latest State of Mobile report.

The coronavirus pandemic accelerated mobile adoption in 2020, as people were forced to use their devices to connect with people, work, learn, and play.

Social networking saw time spent per user increase by 325 per cent year on year.

TikTok is set to hit 1.2 billion monthly active users in 2021.

“The world has forever changed. While people stay at home across the world, we saw mobile habits accelerate by three years.” said Theodore Krantz, chief executive officer, App Annie.

James Cordery, head of performance marketing strategy at Deliveroo, said: “In 2020, we were able to focus on executing mobile strategies that really delivered incremental growth for Deliveroo. We were able to couple consumer insights with market context from App Annie to make decisions that have had a high impact on our performance.”
