The Port of Tyne has partnered with BT to launch its 5G internet network.
Announced at the recent Maritime innovation Week, the Newcastle-based port wants to bring 5G to users of the port, and the partnership with BT will enable them to deliver port users advanced technology including AI, robotics and autonomous vehicles, and Internet of Things (IOT) applications.
As the port’s technology partner, BT will use Ericsson equipment to complete the installation. The news follows a multi-million-pound new partnership announced recently by the technology and telecoms firms to provide commercial 5G Private Networks for the UK market – the first agreement of its kind in the UK.
Building upon the port’s in-house innovation capability – the 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub – BT will be installing a 4G and 5G private network hybrid fibre infrastructure which will also be future-proofed for future innovation.
Once live later this year, the new Private Network infrastructure will provide fast and low latency connectivity across the port’s entire estate, opening the potential for the further development and implementation of established and emerging technologies.
Matt Beeton, chief executive of the Port of Tyne said, “5G is an enabler and offers us huge potential to implement world-class technology applications and drive real progress in the port and maritime sectors.
“We already have a range of use case scenarios developed through the Innovation Hub and are ready to collaborate with technology companies to validate these exciting new solutions.”
