Apple supplier Jabil to ‘pour $238m’ into new southern Indian facility

Electronic component maker Jabil is spending around $238 million on building a new electronic manufacturing facility in the Indian southern state of Tamil, according to a report from Reuters.

The move comes as the firm, which is currently a key supplier to global giants including Apple, Cisco and HP, recently signed an agreement in Chicago confirming plans to build the facility near the city of Trichy.

The new development will create around 5000 new jobs to the surrounding areas of Trichy, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Dindigul, Karur and Thanjavur, minister for industries at the government of Indian southern state Tamil Nadu T.R.B Rajaa said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Tamil Nadu has also signed an agreement with Rockwell Automation worth 6.66 billion rupees to expand the automation products maker's manufacturing in the Indian state, as well as another agreement of undisclosed value with Autodesk, the minister added.

Executive president for global business units at Jabil said the move highlights how India is currently emerging as a key manufacturing hub.

"Our expansion in India will enable Jabil to meet and grow with the future needs of our customers and complement our existing facility in Pune," he added, referring to the Western Indian city.
