Apple hits 2 billion device milestone

There are over two billion Apple devices in active use, the company has said revealing a major milestone for the iPhone maker.

This figure factors in Mac desktops and laptops along with iPad tablets and the company’s ubiquitous smartphone. Apple previously said that it had 1.8 billion active devices at the beginning of 2022 following record sales the year before.

By contrast, there are currently three billion active Android devices. Google counts its figure based on active devices with access to the Google Play Store. Google's app store is banned in China, meaning the real number is likely much higher.

Apple previously said that it had 1.5 billion active devices at the start of 2020, with it hitting the 1 billion milestone in 2016.

Commenting on the news, Apple chief exec Tim Cook said: “During the December quarter, we achieved a major milestone and are excited to report that we now have more than 2 billion active devices as part of our growing installed base.”

But despite this latest indicator of Apple’s growing user base, the company’s quarterly results fell short of expectations as a result of lower iPhone sales and production disruptions. Apple recorded its largest quarterly revenue drop in almost seven years, generating $117.2 billion – down 5.49 per cent year-over-year.
