Amazon has signed a renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) with Iberdrola, one of the world's largest clean energy companies.
The PPA will provide with Amazon with 159 Megawatts (MW) of energy from East Anglia THREE, a new offshore wind farm to be launched in the UK, which is the equivalent of 700 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity each year.
The East Anglia THREE windfarm, set to be the “second biggest” offshore windfarm in the world, is expected to become fully operational by 2026.
Iberdrola says that the site, located 68 kilometres off the coast of Suffolk, will produce enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.
Amazon has also signed PPAs with the company for projects in Germany and the US.
“Amazon is enabling renewable projects worldwide because transitioning to carbon-free energy sources is one of the most impactful ways to lower carbon emissions and help us reach our Climate Pledge commitment of net-zero carbon by 2040,” said Lindsay McQuade, director of energy for EMEA at Amazon. “This is good for the planet and our customers. It is great to see Iberdrola using the cloud and AI to turbocharge their renewables business and deliver much-needed clean power to grids worldwide.”
The move comes after a report by the Telegraph published last January said that some of the products made in Amazon’s eco-friendly range were made up to 5,000 miles away and packaged in single-use plastic.
In January, Amazon announced it had signed a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with ENGIE, increasing its share of output from an offshore wind farm in Scotland.
The agreement takes the retailer’s share of Ocean Winds’ Moray West wind farm to a total of 473MW, which is enough energy to power around 650,000 UK homes annually.
