Amazon ranked ‘second best’ place to work in the UK

Amazon has been ranked second place on LinkedIn’s list of top companies to work for in the UK, despite the company facing industrial action from workers over pay.

The annual list uses data from the networking site’s 900 million members and takes into account eight factors which the platform claims leads to career progression. These include the stability of the company, gender diversity and external opportunities.

Amazon, which was ranked seventh place on the list last year, says that over the past seven months it has increased pay for employees in the UK by 10 per cent and by more than 37 per cent since 2018.

However, more than 600 workers kicked off a three-day strike at Amazon’s Coventry warehouse earlier this month after Amazon offered a pay increase of under 50p. The Amazon employees, represented by trade union GMB, were asking for £15 an hour.

Recent reports have also suggested that Amazon has been tempting European employees into “voluntary resignation” as they face stern European labour laws.

Mass layoffs among tech companies – which began late last year – are stalling on the continent due to labour protection laws which make it “virtually impossible” to terminate staff in certain countries without first consulting with employee interest groups.

LinkedIn also ranked Amazon as a top company to work for in other countries, with the retailer earning the top spot in the US, Japan and Spain. It came second place in India and Italy and fourth place in Germany and Australia.
