Amazon expands shipping network with 300 sea routes

Amazon is expanding its logistics network to include over 300 sea routes across Europe.

The company said it has partnered with firms such as shipping and logistics firm DFDS to provide fast and sustainable shipping for over 460,000 UK small and medium enterprises to ship their goods to the EU.

Amazon claims it shares technology with its partners which enables a “hassle-free” customs process for sellers and a fast pick up for shipping agents.

The online retailer said that 2021 small and medium businesses in the UK recorded over £3.3 billion in export sales, with £1.8 billion in export sales in the European Union and £1.5billion in export sales outside of Europe.

It added that buy using sea and rail, it reduces carbon emissions by almost 50 per cent.

“Over the past year we’ve seen that over 50 per cent of UK small and medium enterprises selling on Amazon recorded sales to customers around the world, with more than 45 per cent selling to customers in the European Union,” says Helder Velho, EU vice president of surface transportation. “We use sea routes to transport products of our UK sellers to Amazon’s European buildings, from where they will be shipped to customers once they order.

“Sea routes offer us a more efficient, less carbon intensive, and, fast mode of freight transport from the UK to a range of destinations.”
