AI to add £400bn to UK economy, says Google

Artificial intelligence (AI) will boost the UK’s economy by £400 billion by the year 2030 as it improves productivity and opens up new career paths, Google has said.

According to a new report produced by Google and Public First, a public policy research agency, generative AI could save the average worker around 100 hours a year.

GPs and teachers could also benefit from AI and save over 700,000 hours a year in administrative work, which could offset some of the growing costs and save the public sector around £8 billion, said Google.

Additionally, the tech giant said that AI could help over 1 million people with disabilities at work, boosting the economy by over £30 million per year. The report explained that assistive technologies, such as AI-generated captions, could also enable people with disabilities to regain their independence and return to work.

Debbie Weinstein, vice-president and managing director for Google UK and Ireland, said: “The UK is home to world-leading academic institutions, an enviable startup ecosystem and millions of businesses, large and small, using digital to drive growth. This country has an enormous opportunity to continue its rich tradition of technology leadership. It’s a hub for innovation that Google has been proud to call a home for over 20 years.”
