UK telcos commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions

Twelve of the UK’s largest telecoms providers are collaborating on a sustainability initiative which aims to remove greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the supply chain.

BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Three and Virgin Media have promised to support the Digital Connectivity Forum’s Climate & Sustainability Work Group, which aims to get the industry to reduce its emissions to net zero.

Participants in the initiative met in May with regulator Ofcom and Accenture where they discussed areas where they could collaborate and reduce their supply chain GHG emissions.

The group has agreed to meeting four more times before the end of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), which runs for two weeks from 30 November 2023.

“Individual companies within the telecoms sector have long-established commitments at a company level, however the UK telecoms industry is a complex and interlinked system,” said Alex Mather, head of the Digital Connectivity Forum.

He added: “It is therefore essential that the sector collaborates and works together to address these challenges and achieves industry-wide transformation. I am delighted by the enthusiasm and support for the DCF’s working group on climate issues, and look forward to the work that it will undertake.”
