UK company Threads Software threatens Meta with injunction over name

British firm Threads Software Limited has written to Meta asking it to change the name of its new social media platform in the UK.

The company warned Meta's Instagram, which launched Twitter-like platform Threads in the summer, that if does not change its name within 30 days it will seek an injunction from the English Courts.

JPY Ltd trademarked the name ‘Threads’ for an intelligent message hub it introduced in 2012, with the service actively promoted worldwide since 2014. The company says it then spun of a new business called Threads Software Ltd in 2018.

Threads is a Cloud-based service that captures, transcribes, and organises a company’s digital messages from emails and phone calls into a searchable database.

The company claims that in July 2023, when Meta announced its Threads social media platform, it removed Threads Software Limited from its Facebook platform.

Dr John Yardley, Managing Director of Threads Software Ltd said:

“Taking on a US$150 billion company is not an easy decision for us to make," said John Yardley, managing director of Threats Software Ltd. "We have invested 10 years in our platform, establishing a recognised brand in the name, Threads.

"Our business now faces a serious threat from one of the largest technology companies in the world. We recognise that this is a classic ‘David and Goliath’ battle with Meta. And whilst they may think they can use whatever name they want, that does not give them the right to use the Threads brand name."

National Technology News has approached Meta for comment.
