Three has become the latest mobile network to announce it will bring in data roaming charges for customers travelling in the European Union.
Last month, Vodafone announced that it would bring back roaming charges for people on holiday in Europe, following a similar announcement from EE in June.
On Thursday, the company revealed that from May 2022, those who have taken out a new contract or upgraded with three from 1 October this year will pay a charge of £2 a day when roaming in the EU.
When roaming outside of the EU, customers will be charged £5 a day.
Pay-as-you-go customers who have taken out a contract before 1 October 2021 will be unaffected by these changes.
“We know that Go Roam has always been important to our customers and we had hoped to retain this benefit, but unfortunately there are now too many unknowns, which has made it commercially unviable for us to continue,” said Three in a statement. “This includes variations to the underlying cost of roaming, meaning we now have no visibility over the maximum amount it will cost us to provide a service for our customers to use their phone while abroad.”
It said that it wanted to keep its roaming pricing as simple as possible and that the flat charge of £2 in the EU reflects this.
