Tesla to ‘replace ultrasonic sensors with cameras’ across safety features

Tesla will remove sensors from its vehicles and only use cameras in its safety and driver-assistant features.

The move comes as the car manufacturer faces growing regulatory, legal and public scrutiny over its Autopilot system following crashes.

The car manufacturer will start making the switch this month starting with the Model 3 and the Model Y, said a Reuters report. The sensors will be removed from the Model S and the Model X in 2023.

The vehicles currently have 12 ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear bumpers, as well as short-range sound sensors used to identify nearby objects or when parking, Reuters said.

Tesla first started dropping radar sensors last year due to the shortage of chips, added the news agency.

Chief executive Elon Musk said that the company’s cars could be made autonomous with only cameras, but the billionaire has missed his goal to launch self-driving taxis, according to the report.
