Tech Nation reveals top Black-founded technology start-ups to watch

To mark Black History Month 2022, Tech Nation has announced some of the top Black-founded technology companies to watch this year.

The start-ups have all been selected for the organisation's second Libra growth programme for underrepresented UK tech founders.

The companies include Hormonious Flo, a business that is digitising the research-backed methodology that health coaches use to address the underlying cause of period pain to make the process affordable.

FullSpektrum is a London-based innovation company, providing technologies and services designed to facilitate the digital transformation of local education and integrated care services for neurodivergent learners, including children and young people with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities.

FoodLama, which was founded last year, is a Chrome browser extension that helps customers with specific dietary requirements find foods that they can safely eat as they shop online.

Bendi has developed an online browser extension designed to provide sustainability comparison data for consumer fashion purchases.

“Black founders are still underrepresented in UK tech, but their contributions to society are enormous,” said Abi Mohamed, Libra programme lead, Tech Nation. “This Black History Month, I am celebrating the work of all of the amazing founders accepted into Tech Nation’s Libra programme - who are transforming the way we live across multiple industries."

Mohamed added: “Through Libra, we hope to help even more inspiring underrepresented founders break through the glass ceiling and achieve the success they deserve, by unblocking access to capital, commercial and network.”

Extend Ventures reported last year that between 2009-2019, three quarters of VC investment went to all-white founding teams and just 0.24 per cent went to all-Black founding teams.

It is also estimated that only three per cent of venture capitals in the UK are Black.
