The PlayStation 5 has sold 25 million units, Sony has revealed.
The company sold 3.3 million units in its second quarter, unchanged year-over-year. For the first half of 2022, Sony sold 5.7 million consoles – up from 5.6 million for the first half of 2021 – but still significantly short of its year-end target of 18 million sales.
Revenue from console sales was up 12 per cent to JPY727 billion (US$4.92 billion), largely thanks to a price hike which was implemented globally (outside the US) in September.
While it has hit this milestone after a little under two years since the PS5’s launch, Sony has struggled to keep up with demand for the console. The company has ramped up production in recent months making the infamously elusive console easier to find online and in stores, and Sony will hope this translates to a significant uptick in sales over the holiday period.
The company will also hope that an increase in device sales will stop the rot for its PlayStation Plus subscription service. From a peak of 48 million subscribers in the third quarter of 2021, that figure stood at 45.4 million at the end of the third quarter. A new version of PlayStation Plus, which looks to match the Xbox Game Pass service by including access to a number of top titles such as ‘God of War’, launched in June.
Total monthly active users – including those not paying for the online membership – was also down to 102 million. Software sales fell from 76.4 million in the third quarter of 2021 to 62.5 million, with digital downloads accounting for 63 per cent of that total.
