OpenAI launches ChatGPT Health

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health, a new tool designed to analyse medical records and data from health apps to get better answers to medical questions.

The AI giant said that by connecting medical records and apps such as MyFitnessPal, users will be able to get responses which are more relevant to them, with the tool also designed to help them understand rest results, prepare for appointments, and get started with diet or workout routines.

Health is already one of the most queried topics on ChatGPT, with over 230 million people asking its large language model (LLM) health and wellness questions each week.

OpenAI said that the new service will have strong privacy, security and data controls with additionally layered protections designed specifically for health questions to keep them protected.

Chats in the new tool, which has been designed in collaboration with medical professionals, will not be used to train OpenAI’s other models. The business has also designed ChatGPT Health as a separate space to “protect sensitive data.”

The service is currently in a testing phase and will be made available to users outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK.

Medical record integration and some app integrations will be made available to users in the US only.

OpenAI added that it intends to roll out ChatGPT Health more widely following the initial testing phase.

As health information is spread between apps, medical notes, wearables and other sources, OpenAI explained it can be hard to see the full picture.

“Over two years, we’ve worked with more than 260 physicians who have practiced in 60 countries and dozens of specialties to understand what makes an answer to a health question helpful or potentially harmful—this group has now provided feedback on model outputs over 600,000 times across 30 areas of focus,” the company said. “This collaboration has shaped not just what ChatGPT Health can do, but how it responds: how urgently to encourage follow-ups with a clinician, how to communicate clearly without oversimplifying, and how to prioritise safety in moments that matter.”
