Nvidia commits $250m to UK AI safety

Nvidia has announced a five-year commitment to supply the UK with AI computing capacity, worth $250 million.

The chip giant said it will provide initial access to computing resources worth $50 million, intended to enable UK agentic safety testing.

This will expand over the course of the term.

The firm said a portion of the total amount will go towards major academic AI initiatives such as the British Open-ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD), UCL’s Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR) and UCL’s AI research efforts.

BOLD is focused on developing open-ended AI that aligns with human needs, while SOFAIR aims to produce open-source models with lower uncertainty and robust reasoning.

Kanishka Narayan, minister for AI, said: “This commitment is a vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research – and, in particular, frontier AI safety that is becoming ever more important as AI’s capabilities develop.

“NVIDIA’s donation will help Britain’s AI innovators access the resources they need to bring their ideas to life — and, in the process, help build a distinctly British AI future that is safe, secure and that serves people’s best interests, objectives that will be central to the U.K.’s G20 presidency.”

Earlier this week, a report by the Telegraph revealed that the US has reversed its decision to block British officials from accessing unreleased AI models, restoring the UK’s ability to test systems from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind before their public release,

The reported reversal follows lobbying by Narayan after the White House asked American developers last month to stop sharing their latest models with the UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI). The restriction had prevented British officials from reviewing Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5.1 model.
