Nike has announced the launch of SWOOSH, a new web3-enabled platform for its virtual products.
The retailer said that the new blockchain-powered platform will enable its members to learn about, collect, and co-create virtual creations, including interactive digital objects like virtual shoes or clothing.
The company says that community members will soon be able to wear these items in digital games and “immersive experiences”.
Users will sometimes be able to gain access to physical products or events, including one-on-one chats with athletes or designers.
The announcement follows the launch of other metaverse-based experienced from Nike, including Nikeland on Roblox.
Last year the sports retailer filed several new trademark applications for downloadable virtual goods.
The sportswear brand said that it wants to trademark computer programmes featuring footwear, clothing, headwear, eyewear, bags, sports bags, backpacks, sports equipment, art, toys and accessories for use online and in online virtual worlds.
Nike said that during the rest of 2022 it will grow the platform by inviting in a community that is as "diverse and equitable as possible".
The company plans to prioritise local communities that are part of its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, starting with the United States and select countries in Europe.
Next year, Nike is to debut its first digital collection, which it says will be shaped by the platform's online community.
After the collection drops, members will be able to enter a community challenge to win the opportunity to co-create virtual product with Nike.
