Netflix has announced the launch of its new mobile game service.
Anyone that has a membership with Netflix can now access five new games on Android devices: Stranger Things: 1984 (BonusXP), Stranger Things 3: The Game (BonusXP), Shooting Hoops (Frosty Pop), Card Blast (Amuzo & Rogue Games), and Teeter Up (Frosty Pop).
“Whether you’re craving a casual game you can start from scratch or an immersive experience that lets you dig deeper into your favourite stories, we want to begin to build a library of games that offers something for everyone,” wrote Mike Verdu, vice president, game development at Netflix in a company statement. “We’re in the early days of creating a great gaming experience, and we’re excited to take you on this journey with us.”
Netflix first announced that it was in the early stages of expanding into the gaming market in July. At the time, the business said that it was building on earlier efforts around interactivity as seen in its Black Mirror Bandersnatch and Stranger Things games.
In September, the government announced that streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ could face stricter rules designed to protect UK audiences from harmful material.
It added that the new rules would mean audiences – particularly children – receive a “consistent level of protection” on video-on-demand services, as they do on traditional television broadcasters.
