NCSC helps Manchester United tackle cyber-attack

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is helping Manchester United recover from a cyber-attack.

A NCSC spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident affecting Manchester United Football Club and have been working with law enforcement partners in response.”

The NCSC has recently published advice to sports organisations on how to protect against cyber-attacks.

The football club described the attack as a “sophisticated operation by organised cyber criminals” but reassured fans that its club media channels were unaffected and said no breach of personal data associated with its customers took place.

This is not the first attack on a football organisation; earlier this year the NCSC revealed in its Cyber Threat to Sports Organisations report that the emails of a Premier League club’s managing director had been hacked before a transfer negotiation.

In the summer NCSC warned football fans to secure their online platform streaming accounts to avoid facing phishing scams by hackers.
