Chief executives from technology companies including Microsoft and Google parent company alphabet have been summoned to the White House to talk about issues surrounding artificial intelligence.
According to Reuters, the chief executives will meet with vice president Kamala Harris to discuss concerns about the AI industry including privacy issues, bias and misinformation.
An invitation to the event seen by the newswire said that president Joe Biden had expectations “that companies like yours must make sure their products are safe before making them available to the public.”
Several staff members of the White House will be present at the meeting including chief of staff Jeff Zients, national security adviser Jake Sullivan and secretary of commerce Gina Raimondo.
Many organisations have voiced concern over AI and large language models such as ChatGPT.
Elsewhere, the data protection chief of Ireland has called on lawmakers not to rush in regards to regulating generative AI technologies such as OpenAi’s ChatGPT. Helen Dixon, the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) for Ireland, said that while AI does require oversight, lawmakers across the world should be focused on “figuring out how to regulate it properly,” and avoid creating laws that “really aren’t going to stand up.”
The European Commission proposed legislation for AI last year, but some do not think it is stringent enough. Around 42 German organisations representing more than 140,000 creative workers have stated they want tougher protection over copyright from ChatGPT and said that the technology needs to be “at the centre of meaningful AI market regulation.”
