Meta to trial NFTs on Instagram

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that this week the company will begin trialling digital collectibles on Instagram, enabling creators and collectors to display Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) on their profiles.

With plans to bring similar functionality to Facebook and other Meta apps in future, Zuckerberg also shared that the company is working on augmented reality, ‘basically 3d NFT’s’, that users will be able to bring to their Instagram stories using Meta’s augmented reality (AR) platform, Spark AR.

The AR advances will also enable users to project their art into physical spaces.

NFT’s appear poised to digitise the art world, with the Vatican having recently announced a partnership with metaverse developer Sensorium and the Humanity Foundation 2.0 to develop the first-ever Virtual Reality (VR) and NFT gallery hosting the Vatican’s art, content, and educational initiatives.
