Meta Platforms has paused its use of generative AI (genAI) tools in Brazil.
The American technology giant’s response comes after the country’s government objected to its new privacy policy regarding personal data and AI.
Earlier this month, Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) decided to suspend Meta’s new privacy policy with immediate effect for using personal data to train genAI systems in the country.
The ANPD rules that the company will have to adapt its privacy policy to exclude the section related to the processing of personal data for training genAI, according to the Brazilian authority.
In a statement, Meta said it decided to suspend the tools while it negotiates with the ANPD to resolve the authority’s concerns about genAI.
Given it has the second largest user base in the world for social network WhatsApp, Brazil represents a key market for Mark Zuckerberg’s business.
In June, Meta hosted an event in Sao Paulo to launch its first AI-driven ad targeting program for businesses on the popular chat service.
