HMRC data analyst spend triples in five years

HMRC has nearly tripled its yearly spend on data analyst and data scientist roles in the past five years, according to figures from a Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request.

The FOI, requested and analysed by the Parliament Street think tank, found a significant increase in the hiring of data staff between 2017 and 2021.

During the five year period, the estimated spend for data staff increased by 192 per cent from £4.2 million to £12.4 million.

The number of data staff jumped from 139 to 354.

2021 saw the largest number of new data roles, with 78 people joining the government body.
