Gov launches new infrastructure for smart robotics

The Robotics Growth Partnership (RGP), launched by the government in 2019, has published a document outlining a new infrastructure for smart robotics in the UK.

The Vision for cyber-physical infrastructure (CPI) explores how a “connected ecosystem of virtual and physical infrastructure” could help drive faster and cheaper innovation in smart robotics, as well as other technology areas.

The RGP brings together people from across the industry, academia, and government to identify how smart machines can support the UK’s economic recovery from the pandemic, build resilience to future disruption, and support national schemes like reaching Net Zero.

The document outlines how physical and digital tools can be brought together to reduce the risk for companies as they prototype and test ideas.

“From tackling climate change and revolutionising healthcare, to preparing for national security risks and disruptions to supply chains, we are facing a number of significant opportunities for innovative problem-solving on a global scale,” said science minister George Freeman. “Advances in connected digital and physical technologies are allowing us to create new tools and models to better predict and manage future global shocks from climate change to pandemics, test innovation in real time and drive UK leadership in new approaches to agile regulatory testbeds.

“This Vision represents an important milestone, and lays the groundwork for the commitments made in our Innovation Strategy.”
