The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Google Cloud a £400 million contract for sovereign cloud services.
Under the agreement, Google Cloud will provide cloud infrastructure for data processing and storage.
The MOD states the contract supports its implementation of cloud technology for operational capabilities and information processing, which will incorporate cybersecurity and artificial intelligence systems. The department claims the arrangement will generate employment opportunities and support growth in the UK defence sector.
Google Cloud will establish a UK-based team to manage the contracted services, according to the MOD.
General Sir James Hockenhull, commander of cyber & specialist operations command at the UK MOD, commented: "The Ministry of Defence is committed to utilising next-generation technology and AI to enhance our operational capabilities and ensure the security of the United Kingdom. This partnership is a critical component of our digital transformation strategy, and we are pleased to partner with Google Cloud to deliver a secure and resilient cloud environment for our highly sensitive data."
Separately, Google announced in August plans to invest approximately $9 billion each in cloud and infrastructure projects in Oklahoma and Virginia. The company stated these investments will expand its infrastructure capacity and involve partnerships with local organisations on energy efficiency initiatives.
