A new search engine claiming to rival Google by “giving users honest results” has launched in Europe today.
Neeva, which was founded by ex-Google employee Sridhar Ramaswamy, contains no advertising, affiliate links or tracking. The search engine launched last year in the US and gained more than 600,000 monthly users since its launch.
Neeva said its goal is to give consumers control over the web search experience. Users can select information sources such as news outlets and shopping results, based on personal preferences rather than what advertisers suggest. The company says it will never use customer data to make a profit.
The search engine uses a freemium model with an ad-free basic service and a premium subscription with additional features such as VPN and password manager. Users can connect additional feachers such as Dropbox, Slack and email to search across personal documents.
The company has raised over $80 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Greylock Ventures and Neythri Futures Fund. Neeva also completed a $40million series B funding round in Europe.
Commenting on the launch Sridhar Ramaswamy, chief executive of Neeva, said: “The internet should be your private corner of the web instead of a barrage of ads, SEO spam and irrelevant information. We’re reinventing search by giving users control over sources; providing accurate and transparent results as well as private and customised experiences without the influence of corporate bias, tracked around the web.”
He added: “Google has dominated the search engine market, maintaining over 90 per cent market share. Neeva will challenge this supremacy by creating a better search and browse experience that delights users.”
