Ex-DeepMind co-founder joins VC firm Greylock

Ex-DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman is set to join venture capital (VC) firm Greylock as a venture partner.

Suleyman was previously vice president of AI product management and AI policy at Google.

Greylock said Mustafa will spend his time advising early-stage companies and investing in promising start-ups in the AI space.

London-based artificial intelligence company DeepMind was acquired by Google in 2014 for $650 million.

Deepmind, which was founded in 2010, gained public recognition in 2016 when their AI system AlphaGo beat Go world champion Lee Sedol in a five-game tournament.

“At its core, philosophy focuses on improving our understanding of humanity, and how we evolve as individuals in a society,” said Reid Hoffman venture capital partner at Greylock. “Mustafa has spent years thinking about how technological advances impact society, and he cares deeply about the ethics and governance supporting new AI systems.”

He added: “ What’s more, I know Mustafa is a builder at heart and he is excited to spend time with founders and to explore new ways that AI technology can make an enduring difference in the world.”
