European Banking Authority hit by cyber-attack

The European Banking Authority (EBA) has announced that its Microsoft Exchange Servers have been hit by a cyber-attack.

The authority said that because the vulnerability is linked to its email servers, access to personal data via emails held there could have been obtained by the attacker.

The EBA has launched a full investigation in close cooperation with its ICT provider, as well as a team of forensic experts, and is trying to identify what, if any, data was accessed by the hacker.

“Where appropriate, the EBA will provide information on measures that data subjects might take to mitigate possible adverse effects,” the organisation said.

According to the European authority, the attack has impacted many organisations worldwide.

The EBA said that as a precautionary measure, it has decided to take its email systems completely offline.
