Dell cuts workforce by 5%

Dell will cut around 6,650 jobs due to the falling demand for computers, according to reports by Bloomberg.

In a memo seen by the newswire, Dell’s co-chief operating officer said that the computer manufacturing company is experiencing market conditions that “continue to erode with an uncertain future”.

He added that previous cost cutting measures, including a pause on hiring and limiting travel, had not been enough.

Layoffs at the computer developer will reduce the workforce by around five per cent and will mean the number of employees is at its lowest level since 2017.

The news comes as figures show worldwide PC shipments dropped almost 29 per cent in the last quarter of 2022, the largest quarterly decline since the mid 90s.

Other technology firms have also recently announced layoffs, with Microsoft cutting around 11,000 jobs, or about five per cent of its workforce. IBM said it was going to cut around 4,000 jobs, while Amazon will increase layoffs to more than 18,000.
