DeepMind founder joins Microsoft

Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of Google-owned AI firm DeepMind, has joined Microsoft as chief executive of Microsoft AI where he will lead all consumer AI products including Copilot, Bing and Edge.

Suleyman co-founded DeepMind, an AI and machine learning company and served as its chief product officer. The company was acquired by Google in 2014 for a reported fee of more than $400 million. Suleyman also co-founded Inflection AI in 2022, which focuses on machine learning and generative AI.

He will be joined at Microsoft by other colleagues from Inflection AI including Karén Simonyan who will join as chief scientist.

Suleyman stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Inflection AI would continue under a new chief executive and continue to make its API widely available to developers and businesses across the world.

In an open letter to staff at Microsoft informing them of the changes, chief executive Satya Nadella said he had known Suleyman for several years and admired him as a founder, product maker and builder of pioneering teams.

Nadella said: “We have been operating with speed and intensity and this infusion of new talent will enable us to accelerate our pace yet again. We have a real shot to build technology that was once thought impossible and that lives up to our mission to ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organization on the planet, safely and responsibly.”
