DHL opens new UK parcel hub powered by ‘advanced automation’

DHL eCommerce has announced the opening of a new UK-based parcel hub driven by advanced automation technology.

The e-commerce logistics arm of DHL Group said that technology at the new 25,000 sqm site is able to handle over one million parcels every day.

The new warehouse, located south of Coventry Airport, will create up to 600 local jobs.

The site also features a 48-door cross-dock facility and secure bonded storage as well as customs capabilities to support the expansion of international trade.

The new warehouse forms part of DHL's wider £482 million investment in the UK, which was first announced in 2022.

The investment aims to increase capacity and set a "new benchmark" in parcel automation.

Chief executive of DHL eCommerce Pablo Ciano said that more than any other European market, e-commerce in the UK is booming, with turnover expected to reach £176 billion by 2029.

"With our latest addition to our network, we are significantly expanding our processing and sorting capacity, ensuring we are perfectly equipped to address our customers' needs and support their business growth," continued Ciano. "This is another important step in optimising our UK network to provide our customers with reliable, affordable, and more sustainable parcel services.”

Business minister Justin Madders praised the site opening, saying that it would give a major boost to the UK's logistics sector.

“The UK is open for business, and DHL’s investment is the latest vote of confidence in the country which will deliver economic growth and raise living standards, showing our Plan for Change is working," added Madders.
