Canada launches investigation into TikTok data practices

Federal and provincial governments in Canada are launching a joint investigation into TikTok over the Chinese platform’s data collection practices.

Announced by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the investigation will look at whether TikTok’s practices are in compliance with the country’s privacy laws.

The investigation will also consider "whether valid and meaningful consent is being obtained for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.”

Responding to the commissioner’s statement, a spokesperson for TikTok told Reuters that privacy and safety “is always a top priority” and that the probe is a chance to “set the record straight.”

Canada is the latest country to cast an eye on the Chinese-owned TikTok, with regulators from the likes of the EU and US also taking measures against the app over data privacy concerns. Two of the EU’s largest policy-making institutions have banned TikTok from staff phones, with the US federal government taking a similar measure.
