British man ‘arrested’ over Twitter hack targeting celebrities

A 22-year-old British man has reportedly been arrested over the of hacking several celebrity Twitter accounts, including those of Barack Obama and Jeff Bezos.

The man, who was arrested in Spain, is alleged to have hijacked more than 130 Twitter accounts belonging to celebrities in order to scam followers into sending Bitcoin.

According to a report by Sky News, following the incident Twitter confirmed that a co-ordinated social engineering attack had enabled criminals to post tweets from celebrity accounts, offering to send $2000 for every $1000 sent to a Bitcoin address.

The arrested man has also been accused of hacking accounts on other platforms like TikTok and Snapchat.

Other celebrities targeted included Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Bill Gates.

The Department of Justice has said that the Bitcoin address received over 400 transfers worth around £90,000.
