British law firm Avantia develops AI agent in ‘industry-first’

UK-based Avantia Law says it it has become the first legal firm to develop its own AI agent platform.

The agent, called Ava, is a purpose-built, in-house system designed to streamline legal work, take care of routine legal processes, manage lawyer workflow, and deliver faster outcomes for the company’s clients.

The technology was developed by Avantia’s AI experts, who previously built Bloomberg’s natural language processing platforms and the AI platform that underpins BlackRock’s private markets technology.

The law firm said that Ava combines advanced AI capabilities with oversight from senior lawyers to “redefine how legal services are delivered.”

According to the business, the AI agent has helped to reduce time spent on administrative tasks, such as drafting email replies and follow-ups.

The technology also assists with contract review and drafting, using the company's data and historically agreed positions to help Avantia’s lawyers to negotiate and respond more effectively.

Avantia says that unlike legal technology SaaS solutions or traditional AI tools, Ava is "purpose-built to meet strict legal and compliance standards."

This means that every output is reviewed and validated by senior lawyers, which the company says addresses one of the biggest concerns about AI— quality and reliability.

"Ava represents a turning point for the legal industry,” said James Sutton, founder and chief executive of Avantia Law. “Unlike traditional law firms using SaaS solutions, we’re building bespoke software that is specific to our customer’s needs.

“As the first AI-native legal agents developed by a regulated law firm, Ava combines innovation with trust and accountability. We are not just building AI tools—we’re creating the future of legal services. Our AI-enabled lawyers can work smarter, faster, and with greater impact.”
