Australian bank opens tech hub in US

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) has launched a tech hub in Seattle in a bid to advance the bank’s technology leadership.

CommBank said the tech hub will act as a gateway for the bank to work together with global technology giants, including AWS, Anthropic, and Microsoft, as well as foster innovation exchanges and broaden employee learning.

Through the new hub, which opened this month, CommBank said its technology teams will have the opportunity to take part in a three-week exchange within the Seattle tech precinct.

They will take part in collaborative learning opportunities with global technology firms to build technology-led customer experiences.

The company added that its presence in one of the world's largest tech ecosystems will accelerate its transformation, develop new products for its customers, and attract top talent.

The first group of CommBank technologists currently at the tech hub are focused on learning to fast-track adoption of agentic AI and genAI powered solutions to help small business banking customers manage their finances and run their businesses.

The company added that it will also explore modernising testing to respond to customer feedback faster.

“A tech hub based in Seattle – an area that is home to leading global technology companies – will connect our technologists with our partners to accelerate how we deliver new banking solutions for customers,” said group executive technology officer of CommBank Gavin Munroe.
“Our teams will bring new ideas back to Australia to enhance how we work, while boosting the knowledge and expertise in Australia’s tech ecosystem.”
