Amazon Prime members decline by 600,000 ahead of cost increase

Almost 600,000 British households cancelled their Amazon Prime subscriptions ahead of a planned price rise, according to a new report by Ofcom.

Amazon announced a monthly increase of £1 to £8.99 per month in July.

The video on demand (Vod) survey portion of the Media Nations 2022 report showed that in the three months leading up to Ofcom’s survey – the second quarter of 2022 - UK Prime members fell by 590,000 – marking a drop of four per cent.

The report also found that Netflix experienced a one per cent drop in subscribers with a reduction of 210,000 year on year to 17.1 million during the second quarter.

Commenting on the survey, a spokesperson for Ofcom anticipated that the subscriber downturn could be temporary.

They said: "Ofcom’s survey of subscribers who cancelled earlier this year found that almost three quarters of customers said they thought they would resubscribe – reflecting the flexibility that allows customers to pick up and drop subscriptions depending on changes in programmes, needs or circumstances."

Disney Plus did not experience declines and was found to have increased its UK subscriber base by 1.8 million to 6.6 million overall as the entertainment conglomerate became the world’s biggest streaming service.
