Amazon is restricting LGBT-related search results in UAE

Amazon has said it is restricting search results relating to the LGBT community on its United Arab Emirates (UAE) website.

The move comes as Pride month, a global celebration for the LGBTQ+ community, draws to a close.

Amazon said that while it supports the rights of LGBTQ+ people it needs to abide by legislation.

Same-sex sexual relations are illegal in the UAE and showing support for the LGBTQ+ community could also be classed as unlawful.

“As a company, we remain committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and we believe that the rights of LGBTQ+ people must be protected,” said an Amazon spokesperson. “With Amazon stores around the world, we must also comply with the local laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate.”

A report by the New York Times said that restrictions were implemented after the UAE government threatened to fine the e-commerce giant.
