71% see the metaverse becoming 'part of existing work practices'

71 per cent of business professionals see the metaverse becoming part of their existing work practices, according to a study by telecommunications company Ciena.

The Maryland, US based company surveyed 15,000 people across the globe to gauge their opinions on virtual worlds and their willingness to engage with them.

96 per cent of the respondents saw the value of virtual meetings, and 78 per cent said they would participate in more immersive experiences like the metaverse versus current tools, such as video conferencing.

87 per cent reported feeling comfortable in conducting meetings in a virtual space, while 40 per cent thought their organisation would move away from traditional collaboration environments to more immersive, virtual reality-based platforms in the next two years.

“Clearly, the business world is ready to move to the metaverse and start using more immersive virtual environments for collaboration and innovation,” said Steve Alexander, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Ciena. “Network reliability may be seen as a barrier to making this possible today, but service providers know the demand is there and are already investing and testing to make networks faster, smarter and bring them closer to the user.”
