Graphics cards – prices spike

An unlikely side-effect of the crypto-currencies stampede is that graphics cards are now retailing at a premium.

Because graphics cards can be used to increase the rate of mining crypto-coins, an can be used in parallel to further speed the process, there has been a reported surge in demand, making some manufactures and retailers ration numbers – and thereby increasing prices.

The effect on the corporate market is limited, it is gamers who will suffer most, but mid to low powered cards have their advantages too, so the whole range of cars is affected.

In another related issue, the rapid rise of mining has also led to some fears regarding the large quantities of energy required, and the impact crypto-currencies will indirectly have on climate change.
