Sky yields to the internet

Sky will make all its channels and content available online, ending the need fora satellite dish.

Although the company already offers some online services, the change signifies the triumph of internet connected technologies over bespoke solutions.

Italy is to be the first country to receive all its Sky channels online, followed by Austria, and the UK is expected to follow before 2019.

In what is seen as a response to the growing revenues of Netflix and Amazon, the move underpins the movement away from propriety systems that can ‘lock in’ customers, and a more price sensitive market.

In the six months to 31 December, Sky reported revenue per user in the UK and Ireland fell £1 to £46 a month.
