Amazon reveals Zoox Robotaxi

Amazon’s Zoox has publicly unveiled its autonomous ride-hailing robotaxi.

In June, Amazon signed an agreement to acquire Zoox, with chief executive Aicha Evans and chief technology officer Jesse Levinson staying on to lead the company as a standalone business.

When launched, the service will work like an autonomous Uber, with customers ordering a robotaxi via an app and requesting a journey from a to b.

“This is really about re-imagining transportation,” Zoox Chief Executive Officer Aicha Evans said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “Not only do we have the capital required, we have the long-term vision.”

She described the service as a way for people to move around cities in a clean, safe and enjoyable way.

Zoox would not reveal any details about prices but said that the service would be “affordable.”

The company has also not disclosed when the service will launch, but has confirmed it won’t be next year, according to Bloomberg.

Zoox started in 2014 with the vision of purpose-built, zero-emissions vehicles designed for autonomous ride-hailing, along with an end-to-end autonomy software stack.

Amazon has recently increased its investment in the car sector, participating in a $530 million funding round early last year for self-driving car start-up Aurora Innovation.
